Spirit and Soul Defined

The Spirit and Soul Defined

We are spiritual being. Our “beingness” is the essence of who we are. Thus, I believe the spirit is the essence of who we are.

I think the soul is that part of us that is here to learn and to teach.

Example: Several years ago, a friend collapsed. 911 was called and she was taken to the hospital. Even though she had a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate), it was not given to the paramedics. By the time she reached the hospital, she had been put on life support.

The family kept her on life support. When I walked into her hospital room, I could feel the “emptiness.” I could feel her “essence” was gone. I knew she had “died.” I knew the spirit was gone. I knew the essence of who she was, was gone. She had died and nothing would bring the physical body back to life.

When they took her off life support, the physical body did not “die” immediately. For several days, system by system in her body shut down. The physical form was dying.

Several days after disconnecting the life support, I was sitting in her room and witnessed several interactions. She was not conscious. Someone came in that she wasn’t very fond of. When they put their hand on her shoulder, she yanked her shoulder back. When the person that left her on life support came in, tears rolled down her cheek. And thirdly, when someone she loved very much came into the room, she smiled.

I realized that not only is the soul here to learn but also to teach.

The nurses told me that when I was in the room, her vitals went down to normal. My friend was not “conscious” but she knew when I was in the room. She knew when I was around. Knowing that my present was calming for my friend, I spent a great deal of time with her in the room. She wasn’t conscious but she was aware.

At one point, everything went “still.” I knew the soul was gone. The nurse came in shortly afterwards to take the normally scheduled vitals. I asked her if the vitals had changed. She confirmed that they had and that before long the physical form would died. And, she did died shortly thereafter.

I believe that the spirit is the essence of who we are.
The soul is that part of us that is here to learn and to teach.
